Open Season 3 - Shot #05

Boog is in the circus on a tightrope. He says: "You mean you made me climb all way up here for nothing?". Ursa responds: "Not for nothing, you need to be punished for juggling the dog".

This was one of the sequences that I most enjoyed doing. It's always nice to get a sequence of shots. To make the most of every shot I have planned all three together. It was really worth, but I confess that I was a bit in panic because I had a quota of 3 seconds per week, and as I usually spend most of the time planning and blocking, I ended up getting a few days without sending anything to the director, which is not good, you know, because I worked remotely, the director was not present to see me working. But that was only in my mind... the director probably knew this would happen. My production quota only hit when the scene was finished, so I ended up being delayed during the animation of this sequence, but after it was finished I reached the goal quota again. It was a good lesson.
I ended up having a problem in the shot where Ursa throws the ball up. In the animation file there was no texture on the ball and I didn't knew I would. I animated the squash/stretch but I did not animate the rotation of the ball in the air accordingly, which resulted in a disaster when the shot was rendered.
In the first post of this series I said I did not care much about the look of the splines in the graph editor. Well, I discovered that we can not be sooo sloppy... why: motion blur! As the ball would stay in the air just a few frames, I had parented it to the hand and animated frame by frame when it was in the air. On the screen the ball movement was fluid, but in the graph editor it was crazy, of course, because the position is always relative to the parent (in this case the hand) and the hand was rotating all the time, frame by frame so I had to compensate the position of the ball by moving it enough to the right place. The motion blur calculates its "trail" by generating intermediate frames between the frames that we see on screen, and in this case the intermediate frames of the ball did not work. Result... the motion blur became into a sort of zig-zag :D
It was pure innocence on my part. Later I fixed it and started paying more attention to these details.
It was the first female character I animated in this film. I think it is a little more complicated to animate women. There are many subtleties that if we are not careful we end up losing the femininity of the character. Some things that I used to give sensuality in Ursa was a timing of movements in general slower, more sex appeal in the poses, head bent over, looking at indirect (in which the head is directed to the opposite side of the look) and eyes half closed.

This is the final result and how the shot fitted in the sequence animated by other animators:
