If you want your scene to be the best possible, it is good to spend plenty of time in planning. That's why it's good to work from time to time on personal projects with no deadline because when it's for real this is not always possible. Unfortunately this project I had no time to be testing a lot, the shot had to became at least acceptable in the very first blocking or I would be delayed in the schedule (or lose a night's sleep:), well besides this project I worked all day at Seagulls Fly and for who knows the pace of commercial production, know how frantic it is. Any trick you have to help in your planning is welcome, such as filming yourself, using videos of reference, drawing thumbnails, etc.. One of the tricks that I find good use in shots of action is to do a pencil test. As I was not going to show this pencil test for the director, it was not necessary to be well finished, the intention was to just have a initial feeling of the shot, after all I wanted to leave details open to improve later. There are several softwares you can use to do it, you can even draw on paper if you feel comfortable with. Lately I've been using Flash. This was the pencil test I did for this scene:

Se você quer que sua cena fique o melhor possível, é bom gastar muito tempo no planejamento. Por isso é bom a gente trabalhar de vez em quando em projetos pessoais, sem deadline, pois quando é pra valer isso nem sempre é possível. Infelizmente nesse projeto eu não tive tempo para ficar testando muita coisa, a cena TINHA que sair, no mínimo aceitável, de primeira ou eu atrasaria no cronograma (ou perderia uma noite de sono :), afinal além desse projeto eu trabalhava o dia todo na Seagulls Fly e pra quem conhece o ritmo de produtora sabe que é bem frenético. Qualquer artifício que você tenha para ajudar em seu planejamento é bem-vindo, tais como se filmar, usar vídeos de referência, desenhar thumbnails, etc. Um dos artifícios que eu acho bom usar em cenas de ação é fazer um pencil test. Como eu não ia mostrar esse pencil test para o diretor, não era necessário ficar bem acabado, a intenção era apenas ter um feeling inicial da cena, afinal eu queria deixar detalhes em aberto para melhorar depois. Existem vários programas pra fazer isso, vc pode fazer até no papel mesmo se achar melhor. Ultimamente eu tenho usado o Flash. Esse foi o pencil test que eu fiz para essa cena:




The constraints setup in Maya is always a challenge for me. In this scene I would have to make the constraint of Boog to the Car A, then to World, then to the Car B and back to World. One detail is that while he would be running on the cars, there would the moments that he was in the air, it means, constraint to World again. Of course I could ignore it and adjust frame by frame at times when he was in the air. What a confusion! I ended up making no constraint. First I animated only Boog, with no weight animation on cars, then I animated only the reaction of cars so I used the plugin Grab Anim. This plugin creates a false constraint, animating frame by frame the node that you want to be the child of a parent node that is already animated, in this case Boog is the child of the car during half of the animation, and child of car B for the other half. The advantage is that after applying the plugin, the objects do not keep any constraint and I can freely make the adjustments without worrying. The disadvantage is that if I want to change the animation of the cars, I would have to apply the plugin again.

O setup de constraints no Maya é sempre um desafio pra mim. Nessa cena eu teria que fazer a constraint do Boog no Carro A, depois para World, depois para o Carro B e novamente para World. Um detalhe é que enquanto ele estaria correndo sobre os carros, teria os momentos que ele estaria no ar, ou seja, constraint para World. Claro que eu poderia ignorar isso e ajustar quadro a quadro nos momentos em que ele estaria no ar. Que confusão! Eu acabei não fazendo qualquer constraint. Primeiro eu animei somente o Boog, sem nenhuma reação de peso nos carros, depois eu animei somente a reação dos carros, aí então eu usei novamente o plugin Grab Anim. Esse plugin cria uma constraint falsa, animando quadro a quadro o node que você quer que seja o filho de um node pai que já está animado, no caso o Boog é o filho do carro A na metade da animação, e filho do carro B na outra metade. A vantagem é que depois de aplicado o plugin, os objetos não mantém nenhuma constraint e eu posso livremente fazer os ajustes sem me preocupar. A desvantagem é que se eu quiser mudar a animação dos carros, eu teria que aplicar o plugin novamente.
